Speaker:
Jeff Hummel, MD, MPH
Medical Director for Healthcare Informatics

During this webinar, we provided an overview of how the government's new cost-sharing programs will work. We answered such frequently asked questions as:

  • How quickly can I get paid?
  • What do I need to do to qualify for the maximum payment?
  • What does Medicare's requirement regarding "meaningful use of EHRs" actually mean?

Session 2

In order to qualify for future incentive payments from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, healthcare providers must use electronic health record systems (EHRs) in a meaningful way. Now that the government has released a final draft of these “meaningful use” criteria, the work of figuring out how to apply them has begun.

Join our discussion as we dive into some of the fine points of the new requirements, such as:

  • What exactly does “meaningful use” of an EHR look like?
  • What counts as e-Prescribing?
  • What are the most practical decision support rules for a practice to implement?
  • What choices do I have for providing patients with access to their health information electronically?

Moderator:
Jeff Hummel, MD MPH
Medical Director for Healthcare Informatics

Achieving meaningful EHR use requires rethinking the format of information contained in the medical record. Although physicians’ narrative notes are important for continuity and for understanding what the physician was thinking, they are not accessible to the decision support, reporting, and information-sharing tools by which meaningful use is defined.

Join three regional experts who will discuss the challenges of—and practical approaches for—getting data into an EHR accurately and efficiently. Topics will include:

  • Setting up and maintaining a laboratory interface for results reporting
  • Training clinical support staff to input information so the data-entry load on providers can be minimized
  • Helping providers with the data entry only they can do—namely documenting their clinical decision by entering orders and diagnoses

Session 8
Certified EHRs: Informed Choice

Download the webinar, recorded 11/16/10

Speaker:
Karen Bell, MD MMS
Certification Commission Chair,
CCHIT

More about the speaker

Is your EHR—or the one you’re thinking about—certified? Currently, there are two ways EHRs can be certified:

  1. A complete EHR is one that has been developed to meet, at a minimum, all applicable certification criteria adopted by the Secretary. These certification criteria represent the minimum capabilities EHR technology needs to include and have properly implemented in order to achieve certification. They do not preclude developers from including additional capabilities that are not required for the purposes of certification.
  2. Through an EHR module. A module refers to any service, component, or combination thereof that meets at least one certification criterion adopted by the Secretary of the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC).

The ONC-certified HIT Product List (CHPL) provides a comprehensive listing of complete EHRs and EHR modules that have been tested and certified under the Temporary Certification Program. Only those EHR technologies appearing on the CHPL are officially considered "certified" for the purposes of CMS' incentive programs.

Join Chair of the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT®), an ONC-Authorized Testing and Certifying Body (ONC-ATCB), Karen Bell, MD, MMS, as she gives webinar attendees a comparison of both certification programs, and guidance on which path might be right for providers. CCHIT certifies EHR technology that meets the federal criteria necessary to technically support meaningful use processes in order for providers to be eligible for CMS incentive payments.

Session 9
Change Management: The Elephant in the Room with HIT Adoption

Recorded 1/11/11

Speaker:
Tom Payne, MD, FACP
Medical Director of Medical Center Information Systems and Clinical Associate Professor,
University of Washington

More about the speaker

It’s conventional wisdom that “everyone wants progress, but no one wants change.” And physicians are no different from anyone else in this regard. Yet how do we recognize and implement change that will benefit our practices and our patients? How do we help our colleagues get through it?

Tom Payne, MD, FACP, WIREC’s expert speaker, has developed a basic rule for dealing with change management, one that has been refined over the course of twenty years of helping colleagues through change to electronic medical records, CPOE, electronic documentation, and other difficult transitions. In this informative webinar, Dr. Payne shares his rule with you and gives you the opportunity to discuss its applications in your own practice.

Dr. Payne will also lead you though which pitfalls to avoid and provide tips that will aid you in practice change management—and allow you to sleep better at night.

Session 11
Collecting Patient Demographic Data: Reducing Disparities and Reaching Meaningful Use

Recorded 3/15/11

Speakers:
Dr. Marcia Wilson &
Christina Rowland,
both of the Aligning Forces for Quality National Program Office

This webinar is a joint effort between WIREC, the Puget Sound Health Alliance, and the Clinical Performance Improvement Network.

Across the U.S., racial and ethnic minorities often receive lower-quality healthcare than white patients, regardless of insurance status, income, or disease severity. To better ensure that all patients receive the same high-quality, equitable care, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) has identified the following framework:

  • Collection of standardized patient race, ethnicity, and language data (R/E/L)
  • Analysis of performance measures stratified by R/E/L; and
  • Identification and evaluation of quality improvement interventions targeted to specific patient populations

The collection of R/E/L information to identify disparities—and being able to tie this information to quality improvement efforts—is becoming an explicit component of payment, through Meaningful Use, and accreditation for hospitals and other providers, through the Joint Commission’s revised accreditation standards. This webinar is a great introduction for hospitals and ambulatory care providers and staff to understand the role of R/E/L data and quality improvement in:
  • Identifying and reducing disparities in healthcare,
  • And outlining key decision points in implementing standardized data collection.

Speakers include Dr. Marcia Wilson and Christina Rowland of the Aligning Forces for Quality National Program Office, a far-reaching initiative aimed at improving the overall quality of health and healthcare. Dr. Wilson works directly with multi-stakeholder alliances to assist them in their goals in the provision of equitable care. Rowland serves as senior research associate and provides technical assistance to targeted communities across the country, with a specific focus on improving equity in care.
